Eye and Nasal Allergies

Eye and Nasal Allergies

Our environment contains hundreds of substances that can trigger allergy symptoms. Our body unfortunately can mistakenly identify non-harmful substances such as pollens, molds, pets and dustmite as dangerous items which then triggers allergy symptoms. You could experience runny nose, stuffy nose, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, dark circles under the eyes, coughing, itchy throat or itchy ears.

Hay Fever

Some people refer to nasal allergies as hay fever however contrary to its name, hay fever does not cause a fever. Your symptoms can be either seasonal, which means you experience it only during certain allergy-heavy seasons, or you can have symptoms year-round.

Testing and Treatment

Dr. Rajan will perform an allergy test to determine which substances your body is reacting to. An allergy test is typically performed with plastic skin pricks but can also be performed by a blood test under special circumstances. The process is quick and easy with minimal discomfort. During the prick test, the surface of your skin is pricked by a plastic pricker and the allergen is applied. After about 15 minutes, we look to see which of the pricks causes a welp or hive to appear. Depending on the dimension of the welp, Dr. Rajan will decide what you are allergic to and you will receive results the same day. Overall this will take about 1.5 hours of your time so we ask that you make sure you plan accordingly.

Once we find out what you are allergic to, we can help come up with a treatment plan together and teach you how to follow it. This can include medications or immunotherapy. Immunotherapy for allergies is also called allergy shots. This is a preventative allergy treatment that teaches your body to stop reacting to an allergen and effectively desensitizes your immune system. Allergy shots are often covered by insurance and are very effective. Patients are typically very pleased with their allergy shots and may be able to stop their medications. Other treatment options include allergy drops for patients that cannot make the commitment of coming to our office regularly or have a fear of needles.

Many Americans suffer through these symptoms since they consider them temporary and may be based on seasonal variation. Don’t let sneezing, stuffy nose and watery eyes keep you from enjoying your life outdoors. Call us today to make an appointment!
