Allergy Skin Testing

An allergy test helps you determine which substances your body is reacting to. An allergy test is typically performed with plastic skin pricks but can also be performed by a blood test under special circumstances. The process is quick and easy with minimal discomfort. The test barely scratches the skin and does not break the skin or cause bleeding. It takes about 5 minutes for our staff to place the test on the skin.

Allergy Immunotherapy

Allergy Immunotherapy

Allergy immunotherapy or “allergy shots” are a treatment for your allergies. We take the different allergens that you showed allergies to on your tests, mix them up in vials and then give you injections of them in the arm. This helps change your immune system long-term so that your body no longer reacts to these allergens. The shot does not penetrate the muscle and goes just into the subcutaneous tissue. Under the tongue allergy drops are also offered for patients that have a fear of needles or are unable to return to the clinic for frequent visits.

Patch Testing

Patch testing is a painless procedure where patches are taped onto your back to detect whether you have an allergy to something that is coming into contact with your skin. We typically perform this when Dr. Rajan is concerned that a patient has developed an allergic contact dermatitis. Common culprits are jewelry, fragrances, latex, soaps, poison ivy or dyes. The patches are applied to your back and held in place by hypoallergenic tape.

Oral Immunotherapy

Oral Immunotherapy

Oral immunotherapy is a procedure by which we give patients small incremental doses of the food that they are allergic to, in an effort to desensitize their immune systems. In the past, patients with food allergies were forced to avoid the food that they were allergic to strictly, or fear having a potentially life-threatening reaction.

Oral Challenges

An oral food challenge is a procedure our office will perform if we believe you or your child may have outgrown their food allergy. The process involves eating a full serving size of a food, in small incremental amounts over the course of a half day and they are monitored for symptoms. This is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of food allergy.

Spirometry

Breathing Tests

Spirometry is a test that is used to evaluate your lungs. We are able to measure how much air you can breathe in and out and how fast you are able to blow out. It is a safe and easy test that we perform in our office. This helps Dr. Rajan to determine whether you have asthma and is performed at every visit to make sure your asthma stays well controlled.
