Allergy Skin Testing
What is Allergy Skin Testing?
An allergy test helps you determine which substances your body is reacting to. An allergy test is typically performed with plastic skin pricks but can also be performed by a blood test under special circumstances. The process is quick and easy with minimal discomfort. During the prick test, the surface of your skin is pricked by a plastic pricker and the allergen is applied. The test barely scratches the skin and does not break the skin or cause bleeding. It takes about 5 minutes for our staff to place the test on the skin. After about 15 minutes, we look to see which of the pricks causes a red, raised, itchy area or welp to appear. Depending on the size of the welp, Dr. Rajan will decide what you are allergic to and you will receive results the same day. Overall this will take about 1.5 hours of your time so we ask that you make sure you plan accordingly.
How Do I Prepare for the Test?
You will have to avoid all medications that contain antihistamines for at least 5 days prior to the test. Be sure to read the labels of all of your oral medications, nasal sprays and eye drops which may contain antihistamines and could affect our test results.
Can I Go Back to My Normal Activities After the Test?
Yes! Depending on where we choose to perform the test (your back or your arm), you will have residual hives on the skin that was tested which should resolve in no longer than an hour. Once the test is done you can resume your antihistamines.
